“The Man in the Middle: A Tapestry of Tangled Lives" is an incredibly personal, compelling story of human connection. It’s a story of love between sisters despite their radically different personalities and choices.

It is the story of a young man facing the crisis of making the initial life-defining decisions of oncoming adulthood and how those decisions affect everyone he loves. It is the story of the author’s father and the women in his life and how through her extensive research, this story answers the questions that she has been pondering since she was a child.

The story begins with Anna and Karoline, who are talking about an inconvenience annoying Anna. She admits to her about her pregnancy with Nils, and she is leaving Luke. She shares that she would marry Nills. Luke gets disheartened on watching her with Nills and demands her ring back. His life turns out to be a sad persona.

His brother Mark comes to get him back on track in life. He guides him in the way of living life. Even Karoline tries to connect with him. It is intriguing to read how their lives blend and the twists and turns in their lives. I was completely engrossed in the story.

I was touched by the drift in Karoline's life when she shifted to Portland. Her regret of leaving her twin Anna is seen in her words and actions. She misses the family and is surprised to see Mrs Burns and Susan with kids. Her life takes a peculiar mode, and I enjoyed the changes and her repercussions.

What I enjoyed most about this story were the earthy, believable characters and the way the story unfolds revealing their inner secrets and the consequential gritty decisions they each made throughout their lives. It showed a rare kind of love that I found inspiring. 

I found this book replete with engaging characters caught up in the fragile emotions and drama of first love, war and the realities of life. This quintessential American story is full of twists and turns in which the characters’ decisions and their consequences kept me wanting to follow them through to the end. 

I recommend this book because of its deeply human themes and characters and its wide-ranging appeal and interest.
