Your Joyful Years: Empowering good health and happiness beyond 50 by Prof Joyce Harper
This is a deeply thoughtful book that brings to life the many and varied factors that influence women’s transition through midlife. While menopause matters, this book tells us that midlife for women is so much more than menopause. The stories shared are both poignant and joyful.
I love what she does in the book, drawing on her own recipe for joyful living with inspiring examples from women living well and all of this underpinned by scientific evidence. It’s a powerful fusion of Joyce’s first-hand experience with her professional knowledge. I came away with lots of new ideas on how to make the most of the next chapter.
The second part, Look After Your Health, focuses on the five pillars of wellbeing, which include nutrition; exercise; sleep; mental health; and friendships, including family, friends, community, and lovers. Throughout these chapters, I share the experiences and words of the women I interviewed.
The final chapter, The Future is Yours: Reflect, Reimagine, Reinvent, brings together the author's thoughts about how women can lead their most authentic lives, with good health and happiness. I explore what the women think about religion and spirituality, if they feel free, and what advice they would give their younger self.
The author explained that a balanced diet rich in plants, healthy fats, and moderate protein, such as the Mediterranean Diet, supports longevity by reducing inflammation and metabolic disease. Regular physical activity—particularly a mix of aerobic and strength training—has repeatedly been shown to preserve muscle, bone health, and cognitive function.
Adequate sleep, mental engagement, stress reduction, and social connection are also consistently linked to improved health span. The most powerful anti-ageing tools remain the simple, sustainable habits that nurture body and mind over a lifetime.
Joyce Harper has created an important and uplifting book that puts women’s lived experiences at the heart of the menopause conversation. It challenges outdated narratives and makes a compelling case for why women must be listened to, believed and properly supported at every stage of life. Honest, empowering and long overdue.
Overall, it is an intriguing and thought-provoking read.
