Banaras Meets Berlin by Dr. Yojna Sah Jain | Book Review
"Banaras Meets Berlin" by Dr. Yojna Jain captivated me with its mind-boggling writing. It's the story of living and daring to begin again despite the hardships the world throws in one's path.
The book brilliantly captures the dilemmas in such relationships, including cross-racism, cultural misunderstandings, and evolving laws around the world for immigrants, as well as protests for inclusivity. The book jumps between past and present, and at first, it felt overwhelming, but then it was a smooth transition between the two timelines.
In addition to the main characters, I really liked Ragini's father and how he helped her daughter. The way it shifts between Banaras and Berlin is brilliant, showing Ragini grappling with two completely different worlds.
Because of the cultural clash and the overall immigrant experience, it turns into a journey of self-discovery that reveals where "home" really lies, adding significant depth. The novel tackles tough topics like racism and family expectations head-on without being unduly pessimistic.
Ragini and Ricky, in particular, feel like real people because they have their own flaws, and the writing is simple yet impactful. Their struggles give the impression that their love is more genuine than a fantasy.
Overall, this is not a romantic tale; rather, it is a reimagining of love that is put to the test by prejudices, boundaries, and the burden of belonging.
