Jasmine Trails: Hymns of heart, Chants of motherland by Subhadra Kunduri

Jasmine Trails: Hymns of heart, Chants of motherland by Subhadra Kunduri

"Jasmine Trails" is a thought-provoking, intriguing read. Through the story of Surya and Mulati, the author depicts the hardcore traditions performed that are indirectly following our roots.

Surya is a man who lives in the Godavari district. Surya has a deep connection with a Krishna idol and visualises the visions of the idol. His cousin Malati also feels this connection. They live in a society with stringent rules. These rules do not allow Surya and Malati to be together.

Surya goes to Madras to study more. Malati has to get married when she is very young. This marriage is very depressing, as she could not relish a single day of her marriage, and her husband dies. It leaves her alone facing the adversaries and lying alone in one corner, like no use to family or society.

But her hope to study does not die, and she begins learning again from her teacher secretly. But to her dismay, her mother, considering her a bad omen, takes her to the village and tries to change her life.

It was intriguing to read about Surya understanding her poor condition and trying to break down old customs and create new ones. The scenes at home, with rituals and family conversations, feel authentic and warm.

Subhadra’s writing is gentle yet vivid. It captures the rhythm of an India caught between old customs and new dreams. The author paints Surya’s inner world beautifully.

The Krishna Vigraha becomes more than a symbol—it represents faith, love, and the pull of destiny. The novel’s strength lies in its emotional honesty and its simple, lyrical language.

Overall, Jasmine Trails is about Surya and his journey of breaking down old customs.
